Expansion and Renovation Project

For the past eighteen years, Ujima has actively attempted to acquire space
that allows it to give production opportunities to those segments of the
population that are traditionally under-represented in theatre production:
senior citizens, youth, and the handicapped. Ujima wishes to be universally
accessible in keeping with their guiding philosophy, Ujima, which means
"collective work and responsibility'. We believe that while it is important to
make the audience space accessible to everyone and provide ticket prices
that are affordable to everyone, it is equally as important to provide
performance and production accessibility.
Phase 1

• Internal expansion of back stage to provide:

• Dressing rooms

• Toilet room

• Property storage

• Internal installation of elevator (ADA)

Phase 2

• Handicap accessible patron toilet rooms (ADA)

• Lobby expansion to provide adequate internal waiting area

• Handicapped theater seating

It is the goal of the Ujima Company, Inc. to provide its patrons with appropriate facilities that meet required codes, offer accessibility to handicapped patrons, and provide adequate theatrical facilities. Ujima anticipates that the installation of the elevator will greatly increase its access to a new audience. Ujima also expects that the improvements in the size and comfort of the lobby and restrooms will make the theater more attractive and marketable.
